How we handle your information
Marine Layer Web collects only what we need to build and run websites for local businesses. We never sell your information.
1. Who we are
Marine Layer Web ("we") is a small web design business owned and run by Kyle, serving San Diego businesses. This policy covers marinelayerweb.com, our emails, website previews, and the websites and Care Plan we provide. Questions: kyle@marinelayerweb.com.
2. What we collect
We collect business contact details and the content you send us for your site.
- Contact details: your name, business name, email address and phone number when you email us, fill in the free-preview form on this website, or become a client.
- Site content: the logo, photos, hours, services, menu and other details you send us to build your site.
- Billing details: your billing name, email and address, and payment records. Card and bank details are collected and stored by Stripe, our payment processor; we never see or store your full card number.
- Messages: the emails we exchange with you.
3. Business research and previews
Before contacting a business, we look at publicly available information about it.
- We review public business listings and websites for details like a business's name, address, phone number, hours and services, and whether it already has a working website.
- We use automated tools, including AI services, to help research businesses and draft free website previews. These tools receive public business information, not private personal information.
- A preview is a mockup shared at a private link and clearly labeled as a preview, not the business's official website. It is not listed in search engines.
- If you'd like us not to contact your business, reply "no thanks" to any email or write to us, and we'll add you to our do-not-contact list and delete your preview.
4. How we use it
- To prepare previews, build, launch, host and update your website.
- To send invoices, collect payment and manage your Care Plan.
- To reply to you and send occasional messages about our services. Every marketing email includes a way to opt out.
- To keep records required by law, such as tax records.
We do not sell or rent your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
6. This website
- marinelayerweb.com uses no cookies and no advertising or cross-site tracking tools.
- Visit counts: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages and free tools are useful. It doesn't use cookies or store anything on your device, and it doesn't identify you or follow you to other sites; we see only totals such as page views, referring sites, countries and device types.
- Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes basic technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.
- Because we don't track individual visitors, the site works the same whether or not your browser sends a "Do Not Track" signal.
- Free-preview form: when you send the form, we receive the details you type (business name, type of business, your name, email or phone, website and message), plus the page you sent it from and the demo style you picked, if any. Cloudflare holds the request for a short time (never more than 30 days) until we copy it to our own records and delete it there. We use it only to reply to you and build your preview. To limit spam we keep a short-lived, scrambled (hashed) code derived from your IP address for one hour; we never store the IP address itself.
- The "See your site in 30 seconds" demo runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type into the demo is sent to us unless you then send the form.
- Links to other sites, such as Google Maps or Stripe, are covered by those companies' own privacy policies.
7. How long we keep it
- Free-preview requests: kept while we work on your preview and for up to 12 months after, unless you become a client. Deleted sooner on request.
- Previews: deleted on request, or when you decide not to go ahead.
- Client files and content: kept while we build, host or update your site, and for up to 12 months after our work ends so we can help if you need it. Deleted sooner on request.
- Billing records: kept as long as tax law requires, usually up to 7 years.
- Do-not-contact list: kept so we can keep honoring your request.
8. Your choices
Email kyle@marinelayerweb.com at any time to:
- ask what information we hold about you or your business;
- correct it, or ask us to delete it (we may keep what the law requires, such as billing records);
- stop receiving our emails.
We respond within 10 business days. Care Plan clients can also update their billing details through Stripe.
9. Security
We use reputable providers with encryption (HTTPS), protect our accounts with secure sign-in, and limit who can access your information. No method is perfectly secure, but if we learn of a breach affecting your information, we'll tell you promptly.
Our services are for businesses and are not directed to children under 13.
10. Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date, and email active clients about important changes.
